Eames Furniture

Charles and Ray Eames are among the most significant designers of the 20th century; known for their contributions to architecture, furniture design and manufacturing.

Born in 1907, Charles Eames developed an interest in engineering and architecture and started his own architecture firm in 1930. Soon after, he extended his ideas beyond architecture and received a fellowship to Cranbook Academy of Art in Michigan. He eventually became the head of the design department.

Eventually marrying Ray Kaiser Eames in 1941, the couple went on to continue furniture design after winning prizes for moulding plywood into complex curves. During WW2, they were commissioned by the US Navy to manufacture molded plywood splints and stretchers.

1946 saw the first Eames molded plywood chair manufactured; which was called "the chair of the century" by architectural critic Esther McCoy. Manufacturing was taken over by Herman Miller Inc from Evans Products, and to date they still produce the furniture in the US; with Vitra International manufacturing their products for Europe.

Eames chairs are one of our favourites at Floorspace. We love the individuality you can create in a space with their wide range of styles, colours and textures. From office canteens to boardroom chairs and patio furniture, Eames have produced such a wide range that is durable and highly appreciated in the design sector; whilst becoming an icon in design and manufacturing history.
